Rulmeca Corporation Delivers Huge Motorized
Pulleys
New Conveyor Drives for Two Bucket Wheel
Excavators...
 WILMINGTON,
N.C. (March 6, 2004)
—Rulmeca Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of motorized pulleys for
bulk handling, recently delivered four huge Motorized Pulleys for two
crawler-mounted Bucket Wheel Excavators.
A US open pit operator required a spare motorized pulley for a recently-built
FAM excavator (shown in attached photograph.) A US ship loading terminal
operator required three motorized pulleys to retrofit its 40+ year old
excavator with conveyor belt drives no longer available from the original
manufacturer.
Each 800H (31.5” diameter) motorized pulley weighs more than two tons and
delivers up to 180 HP. “Our motorized pulleys began driving
bucket wheel excavator
conveyor boom and
tail belts in the 1960’s, both in new installations and as retrofits,” said
Rulmeca Corporation President, Mike Gawinski.

Since the drive’s motor and gearbox are enclosed within the pulley shell,
Rulmeca Motorized Pulleys save valuable space on
mobile equipment such as bucket wheel
excavators. And the hermetically sealed enclosure increases system
reliability while the self-lubricating gearbox design reduces costly
maintenance expense. Operator safety is improved by the unit’s “dead shaft”
and enclosed drive design that eliminates pinch points. And Rulmeca’s
unique “external brake option” provides material hold back on pivoting
conveyors such as excavator boom and tail belts (see photo insert.)
Applications include all bulk conveyor operations. Rulmeca
motorized pulleys come in a variety of standard dimensions and options to be
customized depending on application. Pulley
diameters range from 8.5"
to 31.5"
with powers ranging from 0.5 to 180 HP. Maintenance is minimal,
requiring an oil change only every 10,000
operating hours or five years of single shift operation.
